Dental anxiety? You’re not alone – and we’re here to help

Woman with dental anxiety

Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and for some people, it can be strong enough to avoid dental appointments altogether. At McMahons Point Dental, we take dental anxiety seriously, and we’ve created an environment where your comfort always comes first.

From the moment you walk through our doors, you’ll notice things are a little different. Our rooms feel more like a calming home than a clinic, and we allow a full hour for your first appointment so you never feel rushed. You’ll have time to talk through your concerns, ask questions, and get to know us before we even look in your mouth.

Our Principal Dentist Dr Edwina has many years of experience helping patients overcome dental anxiety. She’s also a member of the International Society of Dental Anxiety Management and brings a wide range of techniques into your appointment, including breathing strategies, calming music, happy gas, movies, and light IV sedation for more severe dental anxiety.

The clinic also has a therapy dog (Chloe) who greets you at the door as you come in, shows you to the dental surgery and will even sit on your lap or by your side if you are nervous.

What causes dental anxiety?

Everyone’s experience is different, but some common causes include:

  • Fear of pain or needles
  • Negative dental experiences in the past
  • Feeling a lack of control during treatment
  • Embarrassment about the state of your teeth
  • Sensory triggers like the sounds or smells of the dental clinic
  • Anxiety disorders or general fear of medical environments

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone. We have worked with many patients who have avoided the dentist for years, and who now feel comfortable returning regularly thanks to the support and care they’ve received here at McMahons Point Dental.

Why avoiding the dentist makes things worse

It’s understandable that you might want to delay or avoid appointments altogether if you feel anxious. Unfortunately, skipping dental check-ups often leads to bigger problems later on. Untreated tooth decay, gum disease, and infections can all become more painful and complex if left too long.

That’s why choosing the right dentist and getting support early is so important.

How we support you through dental anxiety

Here’s what we offer at McMahons Point Dental to help you feel more at ease:

  • Longer, unrushed appointments, including a one-hour initial appointment
  • Clear explanations and no pressure
  • Calming tools like music, TV and relaxation techniques
  • Happy gas (nitrous oxide)
  • On-site conscious IV sedation (also known as sleep dentistry) with Dr Bree Belford for more severe anxiety
  • A warm, friendly team and a space designed to help you feel safe
  • Chloe the therapy dog, who is always happy to sit by your side or on your lap during your check-up or treatment

We genuinely understand – and we’re here to help

Dr Edwina knows what dental anxiety feels like firsthand. As someone who has experienced it herself, she brings a truly empathetic and patient approach to care. Over the years, she’s helped many people transform their fear of the dentist into a sense of confidence and calm.

If dental anxiety has been holding you back, you don’t need to suffer through it. With the right approach, you can feel comfortable going to the dentist, and we’d love to help you get there.
