Dr Bree Belford – IV Sedationist

Dr. Belford is our resident sedationist. Sleep dentistry, or IV sedation, makes use of a combination of sedative and pain relieving drugs to make people comfortable during dental treatment. It is most helpful for people who are very anxious at the dentist or difficult to get numb; have a gag reflex or sensitive teeth; or require complex or extensive dental treatment.

Dr Belford was born in the USA. He grew up in Connecticut and lived in California before moving to Australia in 1982. He studied Medicine at the University of Newcastle and worked as a Career Medical Officer (CMO) in Emergency Medicine prior to providing sedation services to dentists. He has worked in a number of hospitals in NSW both on a staff, CMO and locum basis. He was Co-Director of Emergency Medicine at Mona Vale Hospital and Acting Director of Emergency Medicine at Campbelltown Hospital as well as CMO in Emergency Medicine at Moruya District Hospital, before shifting to providing procedural anaesthetic and sedation services as a staff sedationist for a number of medical and gynecology clinics in Sydney, Gosford, Newcastle and Wollongong.
Since 2000 Dr. Belford has practiced IV Sedation and Pain Control for dental patients full-time, performing approximately 1000 procedures per year and is one of the most experienced practitioners in the field of IV Sedation for dentistry. He maintains full-time practice for over 100 dental surgeries in the greater Sydney area.

Outside of Medicine, Bree has a life-long interest in Martial Arts and has studied Karate and Aikido since the age of 12 years old. He currently holds the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt (Rokkudan) in Shotokan Karate, and 1st Degree Black Belt (Shodan) in Aikido. He also enjoys Go Kart racing, rollerblading and long distance precision rifle target shooting. Bree is also an amateur radio operator, callsign VK2VVX.
