Wisdom Teeth Removal

Why Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Wisdom teeth typically erupt between the ages of 18 and 25. With our modern, soft diets, our jaws are developing to be smaller than those of our ancestors. This leaves less room for the wisdom teeth. If these teeth have insufficient space to erupt, patients can experience significant pain and discomfort. In some cases, wisdom teeth can cause infections that can spread to adjacent teeth.

How the Procedure Works?

Wisdom tooth removal is a procedure Dr Toulmin carries out routinely. She will begin by applying a numbing gel and a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth. For patients who are extremely anxious, we can offer relaxation techniques, nitrous oxide (happy gas) and sedatives.

Next, Dr Toulmin will open the tissue over the tooth, remove any bone covering the tooth and  remove the tooth. Dr Toulmin may need to cut the tooth in half or thirds to remove it more easily. You may require stitches, and these will usually dissolve over time. You will have to keep a piece of cotton gauze over the wound for half an hour or more until the bleeding stops.

The recovery period will usually only last a few days to a week, after which you feel normal again. You will be given written and verbal instructions on how to take care of yourself after tooth removal.

* Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Speak to Dr Toulmin to determine if this treatment is right for you.

Don’t suffer anymore with Wisdom Teeth Pain

Wisdom tooth pain can be severe and recurring. People can mistakenly believe that when the pain abates it will not return and they do not need to have the tooth removed. This is not necessarily the case.

At McMahons Point Health we conduct a comprehensive examination to determine whether or not you need your wisdom teeth removed. With Wisdom teeth removal, you can prevent decay, infection and misalignment.
