Teeth Whitening North Sydney

Research has shown that after your eyes, your mouth is the first thing that somebody notices about you. Tooth whitening will freshen and brighten your smile, creating a great first impression. Aside from giving many patients greater confidence, there is evidence that whitening your teeth can decrease the amount of plaque and decay-causing bacteria in your mouth, improving your overall oral health. Whitening can be used to give people a younger looking smile. The two types of whitening procedures that we offer are in-chair and take-home whitening.  Read More

In-Chair Whitening

This procedure occurs in the safety of our dental clinic, offering the fastest results. If you are nearing your wedding or graduation date, or have another important event coming up, this is the procedure for you. The process begins with placing a protective barrier on your gums, then we apply a Carbamide Peroxide bleaching gel to the teeth and leave it on for approximately fifteen minutes. An LED light is used to activate the gel which is then washed off and re- applied a number of times. You may need to repeat this procedure again to get the desired results, or you can opt for a take- home whitening kit instead.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

For take-home whitening, impressions are taken of your teeth that are used to make customized whitening trays that snugly fit your teeth. You are given a take- home whitening package that includes the trays and whitening gel, then whiten at a time that is most convenient to you. Results are slower than in-chair whitening but there is less risk of sensitivity and the results are often better. The advantage of individual trays custom- made for you, rather than the generic whitening packs from the chemist, include:

  • Better fitting trays mean you are less likely to get gel leaking out of the trays and damaging your gums
  • You use less gel
  • More comfortable
  • Dentists have the ability to give stronger, faster working whitening gel
  • If you take good care, these trays can last you many years

Also remember that whitening toothpastes are very abrasive and can damage the enamel of your teeth. In fact, because enamel is whiter than the underlying dentine, with prolonged use whitening toothpaste wears away your enamel and may make your teeth look worse!

How Does It Work

Our whitening products contain carbamide peroxide. When this gel comes in contact with the teeth, oxygen molecules are released which act to break down the debris on the surface of your teeth.

What Causes Teeth Staining?

Tooth stains can be intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic staining involves changes to the internal structure of the tooth and can be caused by medications, trauma and high fevers. While whitening can help, often more is needed to completely mask the stains, such as composite or porcelain veneers. Intrinsic staining occurs due to staining foods and beverages. Common culprits include tea, coffee, red wine, curry and smoking.
